GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring and writing content so that AI systems, chat assistants and AI-powered search, cite or draw on it when generating answers. Where SEO optimizes for ranking, GEO optimizes for being the source.

Generative engines do not return ten blue links; they synthesize an answer and, at best, attribute a few sources. Getting into that answer rewards different properties than ranking did: clear, self-contained statements that survive being quoted out of context, consistent terminology, explicit definitions near the top of the page, structured data, and demonstrable expertise on a tight topic. A page that answers its core question in the first two sentences is more citable than one that buries the answer under a narrative introduction.

For iGaming affiliates this shift lands directly on the business model. Affiliate sites earn by ranking for comparison and intent queries, then converting that traffic into FTDs. When an AI assistant answers 'how does a hybrid deal work' directly, the click may never happen. GEO is the response: become the entity the engine cites for definitions, deal mechanics, and comparisons in your vertical, so that the traffic which still clicks arrives with high intent and your brand carries authority into the answers themselves.

In practice GEO and SEO overlap heavily. Accurate definitions, question-shaped headings, FAQ blocks, schema markup, and genuine subject depth serve both. The divergence is in emphasis: GEO cares less about keyword placement and more about whether each claim is precise, attributable, and phrased so a model can lift it cleanly. Thin, spun affiliate content, which was already losing in search, is worthless to a generative engine.

Why it matters

Affiliate revenue depends on discoverability, and discoverability is moving from ranked links to generated answers. Sites that invest in citable, precise content keep a channel open as zero-click behavior grows; sites optimized purely for yesterday's SERP watch their top of funnel evaporate. Fewer, better visitors converting to FTDs beats raw click volume, and GEO is aligned with exactly that trade.
