How the game is played
#Cards count at face value, picture cards count ten, and an ace counts one or eleven, whichever helps the hand. You and the dealer each start with two cards, and the aim is to hold a higher total than the dealer without exceeding 21. An ace with a ten-value card on the opening deal is a blackjack, traditionally paid at 3 to 2.
You then choose: stand, take another card, double your stake on one further card, or split a pair into two hands. The dealer has no choices at all. House rules fix the dealer's play completely, typically drawing on 16 or less and standing on 17 or more, which is why the dealer's behaviour is predictable and yours is the only variable in the game.
Where the edge actually comes from
#The dealer does not win because of better cards or a better rule for drawing. The dealer wins because of the order of play. You act first, and if you exceed 21 your stake is lost immediately, even when the dealer would have gone on to exceed 21 in the same round. Those hands, where both sides would have busted, are collected by the house purely because you got there first.
That single asymmetry is the entire structural advantage of blackjack. Everything else in the rules, including the 3 to 2 payout on a blackjack and the option to double or split, exists to give some of it back. It is why accurate play matters here and does not matter at roulette: your decisions determine how often you put yourself in a position to bust first.
What basic strategy is, and what it is not
#For every combination of your hand and the dealer's visible card, one decision has a better expected result than the others. The complete set of those decisions is called basic strategy, and it is not a matter of opinion: it is the output of working through every possible continuation of the hand. It depends on the rules in force, so the correct chart for a six-deck game where the dealer stands on soft 17 differs slightly from a single-deck game.
Played accurately, under favourable rules, it brings the house edge down to roughly half a percent, which is among the lowest costs available in a casino. That figure comes from complete combinatorial analysis of the game rather than from anything this page derives, and it assumes every decision is correct.
What it is not is a way to win. It minimises a cost that stays positive: the best available play still loses money on average, just slowly. Departing from it costs more, and departing from it often, which is what most players do, is why the real edge at a blackjack table is usually well above the published figure. Two people at the same table can face genuinely different costs, which is true of no game covered elsewhere on this site.
The rules that change the price, and one that nearly quadruples it
#Blackjack is not one game but a family of them, and the table rules move the cost far more than most players realise. A dealer who draws on soft 17 rather than standing costs you more. Being allowed to double after a split, or to surrender half your stake against a strong dealer card, costs you less. Fewer decks are marginally better for the player.
One rule change dominates all of the others, and it is easy to check. A blackjack occurs on roughly 4.73% of opening hands, since an ace with a ten-value card can arrive in either order: two chances of one in thirteen multiplied by four in thirteen. Paying that hand at 6 to 5 instead of 3 to 2 reduces the win by 0.3 of a stake each time it happens. Multiply 0.0473 by 0.3 and you get about 1.42% added to the house edge.
So a table paying 6:5 turns a game costing roughly 0.5% into one costing roughly 1.9%, close to four times as much, while looking identical and often advertising lower minimum stakes. The payout printed on the felt is worth more attention than every other rule combined.

Insurance, and counting cards
#When the dealer shows an ace, you may take insurance, a side bet paying 2 to 1 that the hidden card is a ten-value card. Its cost is easy to work out. With one deck and only the ace visible, 16 of the remaining 51 cards complete the dealer's blackjack: the bet wins 16 times and loses 35 times in 51, so two units won against 35 lost, a shortfall of three units in 51, or about 5.9%. It is one of the more expensive bets on the floor, and it is offered at the moment players feel most exposed.
Card counting is real, and it is the one legitimate exception in this entire subject. Tracking the proportion of high cards left in a physical shoe genuinely shifts the odds, because a deck rich in tens and aces favours the player, and betting more when that happens can turn the edge positive. It requires a physical shoe, deep penetration before shuffling, and the ability to vary stakes without being noticed.
None of that survives online. A game running on a random number generator reconstitutes the full shoe for every hand, so there is no depleted deck to track and nothing to count. Live-dealer tables use multiple decks with frequent shuffling for precisely this reason. Counting is not cheating and it is not illegal, but presenting it as a route to profit on an online table is simply false.

Why does the dealer win if we both bust?
Because you act first. Your hand is settled the moment it exceeds 21, before the dealer draws at all, so the round ends with your stake already lost. That ordering, not the cards or the drawing rules, is where the house edge in blackjack comes from.
Does basic strategy mean I will win?
No. It means you lose more slowly. Accurate play under favourable rules reduces the cost to around half a percent of each stake, which is low but still positive: the average outcome remains a loss. It minimises the edge rather than reversing it.
Should I ever take insurance?
As a plain bet it costs roughly 5.9%, which makes it one of the worse propositions available, and it is offered precisely when losing the main hand feels most likely. Without information about the remaining cards, there is no case for it, whatever the size of the hand you are protecting.
Can I count cards on an online blackjack table?
Not against a random number generator, which reshuffles for every hand and leaves nothing to track. Live-dealer games use several decks and shuffle often enough to make it impractical. Counting works on a physical shoe with deep penetration, conditions that online play does not provide.
